Licensing & Cross-Border Terms

How local Helensburgh licence rules, UK-wide distance hires and cross-border pre-booked vehicles work.

Why licence rules matter

Every private hire journey in the UK must follow the licence rules of the area where it operates. The type of booking — local, distance or cross-border — decides which vehicle and licence can be used.

Local Helensburgh licence rules

National Private Taxi Hire is based in Helensburgh, Scotland. Short, door-to-door rides within Helensburgh, Rhu, Cardross and the Lomond area are provided under the local private-hire licence framework. These local bookings are limited to 6 passengers and the vehicle must be licensed for that local area.

Distance hires across the UK

Any journey that starts or ends outside the local Helensburgh area is a distance hire. This covers Glasgow, Edinburgh, Scotland-wide travel, airport transfers and journeys to England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Distance hires can use executive and luxury vehicles with up to 8 passenger seats.

Cross-border and pre-booked vehicles

When a journey crosses into a different licensing area, we can arrange a pre-booked vehicle licensed for the destination area. This helps avoid local restrictions that would apply to a Helensburgh-only licensed vehicle. All cross-border bookings must be made in advance and are dispatched through the Trident Taxis driver network.

Passenger capacity by booking type

  • Local Helensburgh bookings: up to 6 passengers.
  • Distance and cross-border hires: up to 8 passengers.
  • Vehicle capacity is confirmed at the time of booking based on the route and licence rules.

Pre-booking requirement

  • Every private hire journey must be pre-booked.
  • We do not accept street hails or immediate kerbside pick-ups.
  • The more notice you give, the easier it is to secure the right vehicle and driver for longer or cross-border routes.

Licensed operators and compliance

  • Bookings are dispatched through a network of licensed private hire operators.
  • Each operator is responsible for meeting the licence rules of its own local authority.
  • National Private Taxi Hire acts as the booking agent and coordinator for your journey.

UK-wide coverage

We can arrange executive and luxury private hire for up to 8 passengers across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Pre-booked only

All journeys must be booked in advance. Cross-border and long-distance trips need enough notice to match the right licensed vehicle.
